The type-species of &lt;em&gt;Marcusenius&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Gnathonemus&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Mormyrus&lt;/em&gt; are discussed. A list of the genera, with their type-species, is given, together with an identification-key. Some hypotheses, concerning species clusters within the critical genus &lt;em&gt;Marcusenius&lt;/em&gt;, are advanced.&lt;/p&gt;
