Notes on our classification & how to cite

This site uses a classification identical to the one found in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (June, 2025) with the following exceptions:

We recognize Campylomormyrus compressirostris (Pellegrin, 1924) as a valid species following Feulner et al. (2007) and other publicatiions of the R. Tiedemann lab.

We recognize Pollimyrus plagiostoma (Boulenger 1898) as the current valid combination for this taxon and do not place it Cyphomyrus, per Stiassny et al. 2021.

Pending study, we continue to recognize Marcusenius brucii (Boulenger, 1910) as a valid species instead of a synonym of Marcusenius senegalensis (Steindachner, 1870).

Mintotom mi ne vé ? means "where are the mormyrids?" in the Fang language of Gabon.  The singular word for "mormyrid" in Fang is "ntotom."
