Type species: Mormyrus pauciradiatus Steindachner, 1866. Type by monotypy.

Taxonomic notes:

Gender: Masculine. Heteromormyrus was introduced by Steindachner (1866) as a subgenus of Mormyrus. Elevated to genus by Taverne, 1972. This genus remained monotypic until Sullivan et al. (2022) using sequence data derived from the H. pauciradiatus holotype added five other species recognized at the time in genera Hippopotamyrus (4) and Paramormyrops (1). Additional species await description.
