The most recent specimen of this species is from 1929, and no types are known. It is therefore questionable if this is a good species, and it is categorized as Data Deficient. In north Africa it is Regionally Extinct. The species used to be distributed along the whole River Nile in Egypt. The construction of High Aswan Dam (1970) is believed to be the cause of the species extirpation from the region.
