This species has a wide distribution, with no known major widespread threats. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. It has also been assessed regionally as Least Concern for western Africa, though potential threats are deforestation, drought and aquatic weeds. In central Africa Mormyrus macrophthalmus is only known from two localities. Its identification and distribution should be considered provisional pending additional collections, and is thus categorized as Data Deficient.

Range Description:
This species is patchily distributed from Guinea to Cameroon.
Central Africa: It is known from two collection localities in Lower Guinea, one from the Cross River and one from the Sanaga River of Cameroon. Its identification and distribution should be considered provisional pending additional collections.
Western Africa: It is found in the Niger and Volta River basins.
