Possesses electroreceptors over the entire head and on the ventral and dorsal regions of the body, but absent from the side and the caudal peduncle where the electric organ is located (Ref. 10011). A fractional spawner (Ref. 10605; 10606).

This species is widely distributed from Senegal to Ethiopia.
Northern Africa: It was recorded by Boulenger (1907) from Egyptian Lower Nile, but is now Regionally Extinct.
Northeast Africa: It is found in the Ghazal and Jebel systems, and White Nile to Khartoum, Sudan, as well as Baro River, Ethiopia.
Western Africa: This species is known from the Sahelo-Sudanese basins, the Sngal, Gambia and Volta, Gba, Bandama, Como, Mono and the lagoons Ebri and Aguien.

Africa: Nile and Chad basins. Known from the great Sahelo-Soudanian basins in Senegal, Gambia and Volta; also in the Mono, the Gêba, the Bandama, the Comoe River, and the Ebrie and Aguien lagoons (Ref. 2915).
