Justification

This species has a wide distribution, with no known major widespread threats. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. It has also been assessed regionally as Least Concern for north eastern and western Africa. In north Africa, it is now Regionally Extinct. The construction of High Aswan Dam (1970) is believed to be the cause of the species extirpation from the region.

This species is demersal and potamodromous. It possesses electroreceptors over the entire head and on the ventral and dorsal regions of the body, but absent from the side and the caudal peduncle where the electric organ is located. A fractional spawner.
