General Description:

From Poll 1945, translated from the French:

Depth 3½ times head, 3 1/6 in SL. Head twice as long as wide, 1½ times as long as deep, snout rounded, somewhat protruding, contained 4½ times in HL. Mouth terminal, straight, narrow, its width 1/5 HL. Teeth small and bicuspid, 7 above, 8 below; distance between nostrils equal to distance to anterior edge of eye. Eye small, 5¾ times in HL, 1½ times interorbital width, which goes 3 3/5 times in HL. Eye diameter larger than its distance to the inferior nostril. Dorsal 16, it length twice in the distance which separates it from the head, its origin above the 7th anal ray, its longest anterior ray twice in HL. Anal 21, equidistant from the base of the ventrals and from the origin of the caudal, its longest anterior ray contained twice in HL. Pectroal long, pointed, 1 1/3 times in HL, a little more than 2 times as long as the ventral and attaining the level of the distal end of the ventral. Caudal lobes more or less rounded (damaged). Caudal peduncle 2½ times as long as deep. 39–41 scales in lateral line, 7 / 12 transverse scales on body, 7 / 9 between the origin of the dorsal and anal, 12 around the caudal peduncle. Scales of lateral line smaller than those above and below. Lateral line tubes recognizable up to the 23rd to 25th scale. Coloration entrirely and uniformly light brown, underparts of head with fine but distinct black spots. Fins somber.

Stomatorhinus schoutedeni is separated from other Stomatorhinus by the reduced number of scales, 39–41, in the lateral line, of which 23–25 have tubes, and by the large size of the eye, only going 1½ times in the interorbital distance and 5¾ times in HL. Stomatorhinus schoutedeni seems closest to Stomatorhinus ater Pellegrin but the figures we present are sufficient to easily separate the two species.

Stomatorhinus schoutedeni is only known from the type locality Boma on the Lower Congo River.
