Oxymormyrus Bleeker 1874 [Invalid]

While some sources retain subgeneric rank for this name, we treat Oxymormyrus as a junior synonym of Mormyrops, following Hopkins et al. (2007) and Eschmeyer's Catalog of fishes. The history of this name is as follows: - 1874 — establishment as a genus. Bleeker established Oxymormyrus on p. 367, with Mormyrus zanclirostris Günther, 1867 as its type species by original designation and monotypy. - Subgeneric treatment existed by 1968. Gosse’s 1984 Mormyridae account explicitly attributes “Oxymormyrus subgenus of Mormyrops” to Géry (1968:75). Gosse also uses Mormyrops (Oxymormyrus) boulengeri and Mormyrops (Oxymormyrus) zanclirostris; the former combination is attributed to Taverne (1972:165). Thus, 1972 is a documented use, but not the earliest one identified here. Gosse, 1984, in Check-list of the Freshwater Fishes of Africa, vol. 1, pp. 91–92, 97. - 1995 — generic recognition again. The Catalog records Poll & Gosse (1995:133) as recognizing the genus, printed as Oxymyrus. - 2007 — explicit synonymy. Hopkins, Lavoué & Sullivan explain that the two tubular-snouted species fall within Mormyrops. Separating them in their own subgenus would leave the remaining Mormyrops in the nominate subgenus, a paraphyletic group as revealed in molecular phylogenetic studies.
