This species is known from the upper Zambezi River system and Okavango River. Tweddle et al. (2004) found it to be widely distributed throughout the upper Zambezi system, in small tributaries, in isolated lagoons on the floodplain, and in the main river in the floodplain areas and the rocky stretches above Victoria Falls. It is rare in the northern tributaries of the Zambezi in Zambia, but it was found only a few kilometres from the rivers source.
