Habitat and Ecology
This species inhabits lakes, streams and lagoons, and is demersal and potamodromous. Food consists mainly of aquatic insects, crustaceans, annelid worms and vegetable matter. This species is nocturnal, and mostly bottom dwelling. It breeds during flood season and enters the floodplain for this purpose. It has an electric organ in the caudal muscle with a weak discharge.

This species has a wide distribution, with no known major widespread threats. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. It has also been assessed regionally as Least Concern for north eastern and western Africa. In north Africa, the species is found throughout the whole River Nile in Egypt, but is rare. Biology:
Inhabits lakes. Bottom feeding insectivore. Breeds during flood season and enters the floodplain for this purpose (Ref. 28714). Shows three 'preferred' modes of intervals between electric organ discharges (inter-EOD) when at rest: 10-35 ms, 50-120 ms and 200-350 ms (Ref. 10833).
