The species is currently known from around seven or eight locations over a wide area (extent of occurrence is over 280,000 km2, and area of occupancy is over 2,000km2). However due to the threats to the habitat of the species in terms of pollution (oil exploration in Lower Niger), reduction of occurrence and occupancy area (deforestation in Volta basin), aquatic weeds etc. the fish can be classified as Near Threatened as it is close to meeting VU under criterion B2.
