Dorsal 26-30, originating above 6th to 8th ray of anal, its length 1½ to 1 4/5 times in its distance from head. Anal 29-34, nearer base of caudal than base of ventral. Pectoral obtusely pointed, 3/5 to 2/3 length of head, ventral 1/3 to 2/5; pectoral extending beyond base of ventral. Caudal densely scaled, with pointed lobes. Caudal peduncle 3½ times as long as deep, 2/3 to 3/4 length of head. 70-80 scales in lateral line, 12-18 / 19-21 in transverse series on body, 14-15 / 12-15 in transverse series between dorsal and anal, 12 round caudal peduncle. The blunt-jawed elephantnose, Gnathonemus tamandua, is an elephantfish in the genus Gnathonemus. Other names in English include worm-jawed mormyrid. It is found in murky waters in West Africa. The fish is brown or black with a long elephant-like snout and the mouth is located near the end of this probiscis. Its diet consist of worms, small fish, and insects.[citation needed]
In captivity are fairly hard to take care for because they need a narrow range of water temperatures, a large tank, and special food.[citation needed]
