Occurs in shallow inshore waters over both sandy and rocky bottoms, appearing seasonally over muddy bottoms adjacent to extensive papyrus swamps. Also found in deep water, near rocky islands. Feeds on large libellulid nymphs and other large prey (Ref. 9606). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Migrates up the river to spawn (Ref. 10608).

Lake Victoria basin (Seegers et al. unpub.), the Middle and lower Akagera, Kyoga and smaller associated Lakes. Also in Lake Nabugabo and the Victoria Nile (Greenwood 1966). Originally abundant in or near water-lily swamps of Lake Kyoga (Greenwood 1966). Also in Lake Tanganyika (Gosse 1984) and the Malagarasi River (De Vos et al. 2001).

The longnose stonebasher (Gnathonemus longibarbis) is a species of fish in the Mormyridae family. It is found in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, and Tanzania. Its natural habitats are rivers, freshwater lakes, freshwater marshes, and inland deltas.
