From Boulenger 1909, pp. 36–37
Depth of body 7 to 7 ½ times in total length, length of head 4 ½ to 5 times. Head nearly twice as long as deep, with straight, declivous upper profile; snout rounded, projecting a little beyond mouth, the width of which equals hardly 2/3 length of snout; teeth notched, 12 in each jaw; eye very small, in anterior third of head, its diameter 3 times in length of snout, 2 ½ to 3 times in interocular width. Dorsal 19-20, ½ length of anal, originating twice as far from end of snout as from base of caudal. Anal 35-37, originating considerably in advance of dorsal (9th ray corresponding to first dorsal) and at equal distance from head and from base of caudal. Pectoral rounded, 3/5 length of head. Caudal rather small, scaled at the base, with rounded lobes. Caudal peduncle 2 to 2 ½ times as long as deep, ½ to 3/5 length of head. 80-93 scales in lateral line, 12-13/20-22 in transverse series on body, 18-19 in transverse series between dorsal and anal, 16 round caudal peduncle. Mormyrops engystoma is known from the Lower Congo River basin. It was reported from the Middle Chari by Pellegrin (1914), it has never again been found there. Furthermore, the specimens mentioned by Pellegrin have apparently not been preserved, and hence there is no possibility of further verification on this matter. (Paugy et al. 2003).

Africa: lower Congo River basin in Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ref. 42476, 42510). Also reported from the middle Chari (Chad basin) in Chad (Ref. 3052) and the Cross River in Nigeria (Ref. 52861), but presence of this species in West Africa needs confirmation (Ref. 81274).
