Although rare in collections, appears to be widespread from Lower Congo to Middle Congo Basin, also Uélé-Ubangi system. Records from the Niari-Kouilou system of Congo-Brazzaville are likely of a separate, undescribed species (Hopkins et al., 2007). See Fishbase for museum records and localities.

Depth of body 3 to 3 1/2 times in total length, length of head 4 times. Head hardly longer than deep; snout rounded, strongly projecting beyond mouth, 2/7 length of head; mouth small, its width 5 times inlength of head; 7 teeth in upper jaw, 8 in lower; eye very small, 1/2 length of snout, 1/3 interorbital width.Dorsal 17-18, a little more than 1/2 as long as its distance from head. Anal 21-22, 7th ray correspondingto 1st of dorsal, slightly nearer base of ventral than base of caudal. Pectoral pointed, slightly shorter thanhead, twice length of ventral, reaching nearly extremity of latter. Caudal with long, obtusely pointed lobes.Caudal peduncle 3 1/2 times as long as deep, 4/5 to 5/6 length of head. 52-55 scales in lateral line, 8-9 / 13-14 in transverse series on body, 10 / 8-9 in transverse series between dorsal and anal, 16 roundcaudal peduncle. Purplish brown, dotted all over with blackish; dorsal and anal fins darker in front. To 110 mm TL.

Stomatorhinus polylepis is known from the Lower and the Central Congo River basin. It is not known from the Kwango, Kasai, Luknie and Sangha systems. Within Lower Guinea, there are two specimens from the Niari River, but these may belong to a new species (Stiassny et al. 2007).

Africa: lower Congo (Ref. 1877), middle Congo River (Ref. 1877, 1878, 41590), Lake Mai-Ndombe, Lomami (Ref. 41590) and Wagenia Falls (Ref. 42480) in Democratic Republic of the Congo. Also known from 2 specimens from the Niari River in Republic of Congo; further study may reveal these specimens to belong to a new species (Ref. 81635).
