From Boden et al. (1997).
Diagnosis. Dorsal-fin origin is behind the anal-fin origin. Dorsal-fin base ends anterior to the end of the anal fin. Dorsal-fin margin rounded anteriorally and slightly concave, sometimes nearly straight. Dorsal- and anal-fin heights shorter than the lengths of their bases. Lateral-line scales 54-61; generally three lateral-line scales on the dark coloured transversal band. Dorsal-fin rays 22-26. Anal-fin rays 31-34. Number of vertebrae higher than in other species ( 48-49).
Description. Mouth terminal. Teeth bicuspid, five in upper jaw, six in lower jaw. Sub-mental swelling less rounded, beginning well before the anterior margin of the eye. Snout more or less rounded, not blunt. Anterior nostril midway between the tip of snout and the anterior eye-border. Posterior nostril 0·25-0·33 the distance between snout and anterior eye-border. Eye-diameter 33-60% of snout length. Preanal distance shorter than predorsal distance. Dorsal-fin base less than anal. Dorsal-fin height 0·66-0·75 of the length of its base. Anal-fin height also shorter than its base. Pectoral fin nearly twice as long as pelvic fin, extending to, and sometimes beyond the pelvic-fin base. Base of pelvic fin about 0·33 the distance between pectoral-fin base and anal-fin origin. Length of pelvic fin half the distance between pelvic-fin base and anal-fin origin. Low number of dorsal-fin rays (22-26), high number of anal-fin rays (31-34). High number oflateral-line scales ( 54-61 ). Twenty-two to 25 scales between dorsaland anal-fin origins. Three, sometimes four, lateral-line scales cover the dark band between dorsal and anal-fin origins. Dark band not always clearly visible. Head and caudal peduncle darker than the rest of the body. The electrocytes have penetrating stalks innervated on the anterior side (Pa).

Translated from original description by J. Pellegrin (1901)
Body depth contained 4 times in length (minus the caudal), the length of the head 4½ times in length. HL noticeably longer than its depth, dorsal profile rounded, convex. Snout a little less than 1/3 HL. Mouth situated at the level of the ventral border of eye, its width slightly inferior to the snout length. Teeth somewhat scalloped, 5 / 6. Chin with moderately swelling. Eye diameter ½ snout length, 1/7 HL. Dorsal fin composed of 24 or 25 rays beginning above the 6th anal ray; the length of its base equal to a little more than ½ the distance that separates it from the head. Anal fin with 29 to 32 rays, its base about equal to the distance that separates its first ray from the origin of the pelvic fin. The rounded pectoral fin is 2/3 HL and extends beyond the base of the pelvic. Pelvic fin a little more than ½ length of the pectoral. Caudal mostly covered with scales, its lobes elongate and rounded. Caudal peduncle is a little more than 2 times longer than deep, 2/3 of HL, with 8 circumpeduncular scales. Lateral line with 57 scales. Uniformly chocolate brown.

No. 90 — 8 and 9. Coll. Mus. Congo Thollon.
Total length: 225 and 215 mm.
This species is similar to Gnathonemus leopoldianus Boulenger from Lac Leopold II, but has only 8 scales around the caudal peduncle, similar to G. moorii Günther of the Ogooué and Lower Congo from which it differs by its longer body and more numerous scales (57 instead of 43-49) and similar to G. schilthuisiae Boulenger of Lac Leopold II from which it differs by its shorter dorsal and anal fins, its barely visible chin swelling, and its smaller eye and coloration.
