A member of the 'large-scale Marcusenius' group which have 8 scales around caudal peduncle. Cyt b tree in publication indicates nearest relative may be M. schilthuisiae.

Muila Mbulumuki, affluent of Congo River, Kimuabi village, zone A, Mangroves National Park, 6°00'04" S 12°33'01" E, Bas Congo, D.R. Congo.
