Abstract: | The inconsistent nomenclatorial statute of certain genera of Mormyridae (African Teleostean Fishes, super-order Osteoglossomorpha, order Mormyriformes) is responsible, in part, for the present difficulties in classifying the family. The type-species of Marcusenius, Gnathonemus and Mormyrus are discussed. A list of the genera, with their type-species, is given, together with an identification-key. Some hypotheses, concerning species clusters within the critical genus Marcusenius, are advanced. |
