Mormyridae
Mormyrops caballus Pellegrin, 1927
EOL Text
One of two very elongate Mormyrops with non-tubular snouts in Lower Guinea (depth more than 5.9 times into SL). The other, M. breviceps, is distinguished from M. caballus by the wider head profile when viewed from above. The ratio of the HL to interorbital width is 10–18 compared to 9 in M. breviceps (see BIGORNE, 1987).

EOD has a duration of less than 0.5 millisecond with three phases to the waveform. The polarity is inverted, as in Mormyrops zanclirostris, suggesting that the electrocytes are type Pp (penetrating stalks with posterior innervation).

Body depth, 6.3–7.9 times into SL. Maximum depth at mid-body near level of pelvics. Head slightly down-turned, HL 26–29% SL. Head profile concave above and below, and very narrow at level of eye, with snout curved somewhat like a duck’s beak. Snout rounded and long, 6.8–7.2% SL, 24.1–25.9% HL. Nostrils close to one another, far from the eye. Teeth slightly notched, 14–18 above, 14–17 below evenly spaced in single rows around the entire jaw opening. Eye small, about 50–75% of the interorbital width. Dorsal, 28–31, its length 66–74% of the anal. Predorsal distance about 1.1–1.2 times the preanal. Anal 39–42, originates well in advance of dorsal. Pectoral fin rounded, its length about half the distance between pectoral and pelvic fins. Caudal fin small, lobes rounded. Caudal peduncle about 10–11.9% SL, its depth 2.2–2.7 times as long as deep, with 16 circumpeduncular scales. Lateral line with 77–95 scales. Body and fins uniform brown.
