Distribution:

Lower Congo, region of rapids but records also exist for Stanley (Boyoma) Falls and other localities in Upper Congo. These latter require confirmation. See Fishbase occurrence records and point data for localities.

Justification

Stomatorhinus microps is known from the Lower Congo River basin. It is also known from the Boumba River, Dja River basin, Central Congo River basin, Cameroon and from the Wagenia Falls (Stanley Falls). The elaboration of the Inga dam project with Inga 3 and Grand Inga, and the possibility of mining in the Luozi region, could pose future threats to the species. The species is known from maximum five locations.

Threats:

Major Threats

Inga 1 and 2 are existing dams on the Lower Congo with a minimal impact. Inga 3, to be built in five years, will divert a significant amount of flow. Grand Inga will block a great part of the mainstream with major impact. Given the restricted mainstream habitat and mainstream impacts such as pollution, it can be threatened in the future by mining in the Luozi region. The key component of concrete is found in this region, and there is potential to mining in the area.
