Spots on adults only; body depth 3.9-6.2x SL; head length 4.6-6.2x SL; head in 1.6-2.3x longer than wide; base of anal fin 4-7.7x longer than dorsal fin base; the pectoral 1.1-1.7x head length; ventral 2x shorter pectoral; caudal peduncle is 1.5-3.6x its length.

Habitat and Ecology

This species is demersal and potamodromous. It inhabits both still and flowing waters, and breeds in the flood season. Food consists mainly of phytoplankton. It also feeds on molluscs and aquatic insects. Its electric organ discharge (EOD) is steroid-sensitive.

Justification

This species has a wide enough distribution, with no known major widespread threats, to qualify as Least Concern. It has also been assessed regionally as Least Concern for north eastern Africa. It is only known from Lake Nasser with its North African distribution, and more survey work is needed to confirm the full extent of this species' distribution, and it is therefore categorized as Data Deficient in that region.

In north Africa it is very rare, however at Khartoum it is said to be the commonest of all the mormyrids, occurring throughout the year and in large numbers during spring.
