General Description:
After Pellegrin, J., 1924, pp. 4-5.
Depth 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 times in length (minus caudal), head 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 times. Head is 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 times as long as high. Snout abrubtly declivous, only slightly surpasses mouth which opens in front of a vertical from the anterior edge of eye, its width contained 4-5 times in head length; teeth bicuspid: 6 or 7 above, 7 or 8 below. Eye, rounded, medium-sized, 1 1/3 to 1 2/3 times in snout, 1 3/4 to 2 2/3 times in the interorbital space, 5 to 7 times in the head length. 47-51 scales along lateral line, 9 / 14-15 transverse scales, 9-10 / 10-11 between the origin of the dorsal and the anal, 12 around the caudal peduncle. 16 or 17 dorsal rays, first dorsal ray above 4th to the 6th ray of anal, length of its base is about 1/2 its distance from the head. The anal fin, consisting of 20 to 22 rays, is a little closer to the root of the caudal than to the ventral, or midway between the two fins. The pectoral, obtusely pointed, makes up 3/5 to 2/3 of head length, 1 1/2 to 1 2/3 times the length of the ventrals on which it reaches about halfway. The caudal peduncle is 2 times as long as high and half or slightly more than half the length of the head. The tail is scaly at the base with pointed lobes. The general color of body and fins is uniformly very dark brown. D. 16-17; A.20-22; P. 10; V. 6; Sq 9 / 47-51 / 14-15.
Six specimens collected in Kidada (Congo) (Dr.. Schoutedeni).
Total length: 68 + 10 = 78-92 +13 = 105 mm.
This dark Stomatorhinus, by these measures, resembles most closely Stomatorhinus microps BOULENGER, also from Congo, but in this case, in addition to the coloration, the eye is much smaller, mouth more inferior, and dorsal fin slightly longer.

Range Description:
Stomatorhinus ater is only known from Kidada, in an affluent of the Lower Congo River basin, but has yet to be reported from the main channel of the Lower Congo.
