Extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) for this species are probably too large to qualify it for a threatened status, although the species is present only in five river basins (based on the threats affecting populations at present, this is more than five locations). Deforestation, leading to high sediment loads is impacting the species. A decline in EOO or AOO due to a degraded habitat may cause the species to qualify for a threatened category under Criteria B1 or B2.

Threats:
Major Threats
The removal of vegetation due to mining activities, and commercial timber felling, may cause increasing sediment loads. Timber felling is an important threat in the Tano River.
